The Amazing Find in a Abandoned Hangar of WWII German Planes - Luftwaffe Aircraft found in Warehouse
ON THIS DAY In 1940: Dunkirk, British Army Escapes
Few in America probably realise the significance of this day, June 4th, 80 years after the British Army made a fortuitous tactical retreat across the channel.
Hollywood has yet to make a major movie about this momentous event as very few Americans were present – hence the modern-day lack of knowledge of how those brave little boats saved Europe.
Tom Hanks has never appeared on a mole bravely guiding troops onto boats, Spielberg never considered these events worthy of depiction, but to Britons, this was not the end of the beginning, but it may have been the beginning of the end for that nasty chap Hitler.
The French may moan that we Britons abandoned them at Dunkirk, but the truth is much less controversial. Quite a lot of Blanchard’s French Army also withdrew to Britain, sadly, they mostly chose to return home and found themselves largely working in German factories serving the Reich, rather reluctantly it must be said.
It took four long years (and two days) for the British and Allied armies to return to France, in that time, almost the whole of Europe was burned down, Russia lost 25 million at least and the US built enough tanks and planes to drag herself out of bankruptcy and the Great Depression.
There is a phrase coined about an earlier Great War that is highly appropriate on this day – Lest We Forget.
