Wrong Iranian leader trends on Twitter after Trump's sanctions announcement

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was trending on Twitter Monday afternoon and evening after President Trump mistakenly said he was issuing sanctions against the former Iranian supreme leader, who died in 1989.
Trump signed an executive order Monday implementing sanctions targeting Iran’s current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as other high-ranking officials in the country. The executive order will deny Khamenei and others access to financial instruments.
But Twitter users were quick to point out the president’s mistake in identifying the incorrect supreme leader.
