The French revolution was a period of radical political and social change in France from 1789 to 1799

The American ambassador to France before the fall of the Bastille was .Thomas Jefferson.  He was appointed in 1785 and was in Paris to witness the events of the French Revolution, including the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. 

• Role and appointment: 

  Thomas Jefferson was appointed Minister to France by the Confederation Congress in 1785, succeeding Benjamin Franklin. 
• Witnessing the Revolution: 

  As the American diplomat, Jefferson was present in Paris as the French Revolution began and directly observed the events surrounding the storming of the Bastille. 
• Documentation: 

  He recorded his observations of the unfolding events in a letter to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, John Jay.
