The “high-ranking Trump campaign official” referenced in Trump associate Roger Stone’s indictment is former White House chief strategist and Trump campaign chief executive Steve Bannon, according to two new reports.
Stone was arrested Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and has been indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller on seven counts. The charges include one count of obstruction, five counts of making false statements, and one count of witness tampering.
According to the indictment, an unnamed Trump campaign official instructed Stone to learn about which emails WikiLeaks possessed that could contain damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Bannon is the unnamed official referenced, according to reports by CNBC and Bloomberg, each of which cited one unnamed source.

The 24-page indictment outlines that the Trump campaign official contacted Stone about “future releases by Organization 1,” a reference to WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange.
“On or about October 4, 2016, the head of Organization 1 held a press conference but did not release any new materials pertaining to the Clinton Campaign,” the indictment reads. “Shortly afterwards, STONE received an email from the high-ranking Trump Campaign official asking about the status of future releases by Organization 1. STONE answered that the head of Organization 1 had a ‘[s] erious security concern’ but that Organization 1 would release ‘a load every week going forward.’”
That email matches one published by the New York Times in which Stone was communicating with Bannon.
The indictment says that the campaign official was directed by the Trump campaign to contact Stone about the matter, after WikiLeaks released a batch of emails in July from the Democratic National Committee. WikiLeaks later released other documents between October 2016 to November 2016, including emails from the DNC and Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta.
Stone has denied he was involved with any wrongdoing, but has also said on multiple occasions he was expecting to be charged.
The U.S. intelligence community concluded with "high confidence" in 2017 that WikiLeaks was used by Russian intelligence to publish information to help elect President Trump. WikiLeaks has denied this was the case.
